When you are planning to study abroad, you might find yourself with plenty of questions that you want to answer as soon as possible. Most of the doubts come from wanting to know everything about the country you are going to be living in.
If you are coming to study in Malta, which is one of the best countries you can choose to study in Europe, because of many advantages we have mention in past articles; like the low cost of living compared to other countries in Europe, the amazing Mediterranean weather, the international environment and one of the perks we are going to point out now: how easy it is to move around the island!
Due to its small size, it’s very easy and effortless to know about every corner in Malta in a short period of time. You will not need a lot of time to adapt yourself in this country. The furthest point from one another it wouldn’t take more than an hour by car. A bit more if you take the bus. But usually you will be moving in short distances around the island and one of the best ways to do that is by walking. English schools and Universities are around the same area and it’s easy to find accommodations close to them, so you will not find any problems with moving around.
Here we bring together some options of transport on the island so you can have a clear idea of how you can move around when you come to study in Malta.
1. BY WALK
Malta’s surface area is only 316km2. That means that it is a really small country and one of the best ways to get around is on foot. As we just mentioned, the schools and Universities are usually around the same area and there are many options for student’s accommodation very close to them. So it’s normal in the day to day that you take around 15-20 minutes walking to go to any place in the central area of the island where most of the shops, bars, restaurants and schools are located.
2. BY BUS
The bus in Malta is free for residents! If you come to study in Malta, you will not have to pay for the bus. You will just need to get the Student’s Tallinja Card and pay a small fee for the card. Don’t worry about ordering the card, we will take care of it if you come to study with us!
But if you come and you haven’t received the Student’s Tallinja Card yet, the bus fares are not expensive, the price per journey is 1,50€ in winter and 2€ in summer and always 3€ for the night routes. Malta has a wide bus network and is well connected to most places around.
There is an App called Tallinja where you can check the times and the routes of the buses and it’s very helpful to get around and organize your travels.

3. BY CAR
Another great option if you have a driving license is to rent a car by minutes. There is an App called GoTo, where you can rent electric cars all around the island and move around very quickly. But you have to keep in mind that they ride on the left here! So it might take you a couple of days to get used to it. This can be a very cheap option if you share the car with more people. You will be able to travel faster than with the bus, at your own pace, with more freedom and in a more comfortable way. The prices for these GoTo cars start from 2,50 the first 15 minutes and after that is 0,35€ every minute. But given the size of the island, in 15 minutes you can get to many places. It is also an environment-friendly way of moving as the cars work fully with electricity.

4. SCOOTERS, MOTORBIKES, BICYCLES
If you are usually traveling by yourself, to go to work or to the school or University and you can’t go by walking, you can take a motorbike if you have a driving license. It is a very easy way to move around, one of the best options of transport to avoid the traffic and park easily. But no worries if you don’t have a driving license, you can take a scooter or a bicycle. There are electric scooters all around the island and you can travel pretty fast with them. You can rent these scooters and motorbikes by using the GoTo App I mentioned before or the Bolt App (for the scooters).
5. BOOK A RIDE
There are many applications in Malta for booking a ride from your phone very easily and fast, you can download any of these: Bolt, Cool or eCabs.
Bolt is a well known app around the world, it’s a mobility company that offers fast and affordable rides. With Bolt you can order and pay online and it is available all over Malta & Gozo which is really useful! The same as eCabs.
Cool works a bit differently, it’s cheaper than Bolt and eCabs because it’s a ride-sharing app which means you might share your journey with someone else, and maybe the route takes a tiny bit longer because the driver has to pick up someone during your ride. But it’s a really good and cheap option to go around when you are in a rush and you want some easy and cheap solution. Also to mention that you can pay a bit extra for “private” journeys too.
